The motive is probably french but the artist also painted in the area of Stockholm Sweden so there is a possibility that this motive is from Malardalen in Stockholm. Carl Johansson is very famous for this kind of fine landscape paintings and these paintings should not be mixed up with his later production where he painted large spots of blue and lilac all over the paintings and that is why he got the epithet: The blue painter. The blue and lilac paintings are more richly common on the market and they are in the lower price range for this artist. Carl Johansson studied art in Paris and in Intaly and for Perseus and also in the Academy of fine art in Sweden. He participated in the world exhibition of fine art in Paris 1889 and also in Buenos Aires and San Fransisco and he had many exhibitions in his native country Sweden. Carl Johansson went through a development from being an impressionistic painter into becoming a more and more nationalistic painter which were a very typical development for many painters from this period. The painting hang awry on photographs but it is nothing wrong with the painting. The impressionists refers to a new group of artists from France in the 1870ths who started to paint in a totally new way especially concerning how they were portraying the light. The impressionists new theory was based on that the light should be determinant and they made exhibitions together, among them Claude Monet who usually is said to be the very founder of this group of artists, Edouard Manet who explored the optical experiments to the extreme, Edgar Degas who is said to be the most talented in the group had a revulsion against out door painting. The new way of only being concerned with portraying the light (only optical feeling) was dismissed by the followers Cezanne and van Gogh and their last works are referred to as postimpressionistic.
