In 1967 the Genoese critic Germano Celant coined the term Arte Povera relevant for a group of italian artists who opposed to the usual realism in art with use of everyday materials in their creations of sculptures and happenings opposed to the role of art merely to reflect reality. Later exhibitions included work with startling juxtapositions of apparantly unconnected objects. They tried to transform the viewers understandings of known art objects and they therefore made replicas of famous figures and sculptures and paintings in new materials. Arte Povera was a contemporary political radicalism and culminated in the students protests of 1968. Sources: Grove art online,Oxford univerity press. and the Guardian.
